# Multi-currency accounts

> Receive, hold, and send fiat from a dedicated account per currency, like a virtual account.

A multi-currency account is a set of [vaults](/accounts-and-wallets/vault), one per currency. Each vault holds a single fiat currency, set by its `asset` field: an NGN vault has `asset: "NGN"`, and a EUR vault has `asset: "EUR"`.

Each vault works like a virtual account. You get bank details to receive into it, it keeps its own balance, and you pay out from it.

## How it works

| Step | What happens | API |
| - | - | - |
| Receive | Get the vault's bank details for its currency and payment rail, and share them with the payer. Incoming transfers land in the vault. | [Deposit Instructions](/accounts-and-wallets/vault-deposit-instructions) |
| Hold | The vault keeps a balance in its currency until you move it. | [Balances](/accounts-and-wallets/vault-balances) |
| Send | Pay out to a bank account in the same currency, or convert on the way out. | [Pay out to a bank account](/use-cases/payout-bank-account) |
| Convert | Move funds between currencies, for example NGN to EUR. | [FX](/transactions/fx) |

## Example

A business that collects in Nigeria and Europe holds an NGN vault and a EUR vault. Customers pay into each vault's bank details, and each balance builds up in its own currency. The business pays EUR suppliers from the EUR vault, or converts NGN to EUR first.

<Note>
  Use deposit details exactly as the API returns them. A vault can return several options, for example one per payment rail. You can't set a vault's `asset` when you [create a vault](/accounts-and-wallets/create-vault).
